5Cs of Diamond Grading
THE CUT – THE TRUE MARK OF AN EXCEPTIONALLY CRAFTED DIAMOND
When buying jewellery, understanding the cut of the diamond is important. While the 4Cs (carat, colour, clarity and cut) each play a part in the value of the stone, the diamond’s cut – the only one of the 4Cs not entirely determined by nature – is one of the most important factors in the grading process. Often confused with a diamond’s shape (round, princess, heart, pear, emerald, cushion, etc.); the cut of a diamond refers to the facets and angles, their number, proportions and symmetry, all of which is directly linked to the diamond’s ability to reflect light.
While a sophisticated diamond buyer understands how important an excellent cut is to the value of a diamond, it takes practice to know how to buy jewellery taking into account the nuances of diamond cutting. A diamond that is cut too shallow will “leak” light out the bottom while a too deep cut will let light escape from the sides. A diamond that has been cut to the ideal proportions and symmetry will return light out of the table and crown, giving it more fire, brilliance and scintillation. When selecting a diamond, it is always good to have a look at the diamond certificate, which will state the grade of the cut. The popular round brilliant cut diamond, for example, is graded in the form of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor. Considering the importance of an excellent cut, it is highly recommended to buy diamond jewellery from jewellers with the expertise and craftsmanship needed to maximise a diamond’s potential to shine with brilliance.
Shimansky’s diamond cutters are exceptional in their craft. Not only have they mastered the ‘standard’ diamond cuts; they are the only craftsmen in the world who have perfected Shimansky’s internationally patented diamond cuts. One of these world-renowned diamond cuts include the Shimansky My Girl diamond cut, the world’s first square cut diamond with a diamond-shaped table and the first internationally patented diamond cut to originate from South Africa. The patented Brilliant 10 cut, featuring a dazzling 71 facets, is the most brilliant cut diamond in the world and has become renowned for its exquisite beauty.
WHERE DOES THE DIAMOND ORIGINATE FROM?
Diamonds symbolise everlasting love, which is why it is so important to consider their origin when buying one. When buying a diamond from a respected jeweller with the proper documentation, you can be assured that your diamond is conflict-free and ethically sourced to become the symbol of your love.
Unique amongst jewellers, Shimansky has a diamond dealers license, which allows them to purchase diamonds in the rough direct from South African mines. Shimansky is also one of the only jewellery companies in South Africa to hand-select, cut and polish their own diamonds in-house. This does not only allow us to create diamond jewellery under full supervision with complete control over every stage of the creation process, but offers our clients full transparency and traceability of the journey of a Shimansky diamond from mine to finger.
When buying a Shimansky diamond creation you can be assured that you are buying a truly South African treasure with a 100% conflict-free guarantee, sourced responsibly from diamond mines that adhere to ethical mining practices. For your peace of mind – now, and for generations to come, your Shimansky jewellery purchase is accompanied by an Ethical Compliance Certificate.
CHECK YOUR DIAMOND AGAINST THE GIA CERTIFICATE
Knowing how to buy jewellery does not only require an understanding of what it takes to design an exceptional diamond creation, but grasping the importance of a diamond certificate from a trusted source. The most widely recognised and trusted diamond grading laboratories are the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory).
These grading laboratories provide unbiased certification for authenticity and quality and are favoured among the world’s most famous and reputable jewellers.
The diamond certificate, also known as a diamond dossier, will detail a diamond’s unique characteristics, including its cut, carat weight, colour and clarity. The certificate may also include the diamond’s origin, finish (polish and symmetry), fluorescence and additional comments.
Many experienced diamond buyers will peruse the diamond dossier and compare the documented specifications to the diamond’s features. Using a millimetre gauge they may check the measurements of the diamond, check the weight using a scale or use a loupe to compare the imperfections shown on the papers to the imperfections in the diamond. In addition to this, a discerning jewellery buyer may also ask the jeweller to show how the proportions of the cut or “make” of the stone match what is indicated on paper.
LOOK FOR THE HALLMARK
Another tip on how to buy jewellery is to look for the hallmark. The hallmark is part of the anatomy of a diamond ring, engraved in the metal on the inside of the shank. The jewellery’s hallmark is proof that it has been independently tested and verified and therefore conforms to all legal standards of purity or fineness. The absence of such a stamp suggests that the piece of jewellery is merely plated.
The hallmark usually contains the brand, the stamp of the metal used – 750 in the case of 18K gold and 950 in the case of platinum, and often other details such as the centre diamond used. Shimansky platinum engagement rings are hallmarked with the marking of PLAT950 and the SHIMANSKY mark to give clients the assurance that the best platinum was used in order to deliver a diamond creation that is both special and everlasting.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BUY JEWELLERY?
In the hope of acquiring the most beautiful diamond for their budget, many shoppers wonder when is the best time to buy jewellery. During popular gifting times like Christmas, or the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, you may have the opportunity to acquire diamond creations at reduced prices. However, keep in mind that due to their high-quality standards most reputable diamond vendors rarely offer large discounts. Instead of being swept away by the excitement of seasonal discounts we highly recommend to take some time to think through your purchase. After all, a diamond is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase and selecting a beautiful, well-crafted jewellery creation will far outweigh any discounts you may receive.
By selecting a high-quality, reputable jeweller, like Shimansky, you will receive outstanding service and expert guidance in finding the perfect diamond jewellery piece for your budget, regardless the time of year.
IS BUYING JEWELLERY A GOOD INVESTMENT?
Many investors who appreciate the value of physical commodities such as gold or diamonds often ask: “Is buying jewellery a good investment?”. Investing in a diamond remains to be a truly remarkable field with many advantages, especially in times of recession or economic fluctuation. A diamond is portable, there are no holding costs, the diamond’s value will never go down and it’s not affected by the Rand and Dollar fluctuation. Investing in diamonds is certainly a financial alternative worth investigating. It’s worth noting, however, that it takes a lot more than merely considering the 4Cs of a diamond for it to qualify as an investment diamond.
Investment diamonds are in a league of their own and need to meet the Rapaport Specification 2+ quality standard. These types of diamonds are not easily found at a retail level and most often need to be sourced from an international diamond dealer.
A pioneer in the diamond and jewellery trade, Shimansky has a license to buy diamonds direct from South African mines. This allows us to cater to investors in search of unique and special diamonds in rough or polished form.
