Top 5 Ideas for How to Propose on Table Mountain
At over a thousand metres high, Table Mountain 7 wonder of the world delivers views and romance for an unforgettable engagement experience. It’s also one of the New7Wonders of Nature. We love this symbolic connection to the earth and heritage for a couple committing to a future together.
With the Mother City’s ultimate treasure as the inspiration, here are 5 unique ideas for a beautiful proposal.
Idea 1: Hire a guide for assistance
If you’ve only ever reached Table Mountain via the cable car, why not shake things up and hike to the summit. There are incredible scenic routes to be discovered together. The most popular, and direct route, is Platteklip Gorge. It begins on Tafelberg Road, past the lower cable car station.
Other trails include Skeleton Gorge or Nursery Ravine (accessible from Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens) or the Bridle Path, from Constantia Nek. If you want to get down on one knee without the foot traffic of other hikers, consider hiring a guide. The city is brimming with mountain experts that know how to summit the mountain using lesser known paths, safely.
For example, these locals offer Table Mountain hikes far from the crowded paths, via the AirBnb Experiences platform. Ask your guide to carry a small picnic up with you and then select a perfect spot for lunch. Go all out with a picnic blanket, delicious food and something sparkly to drink.
If you’re after a ‘gentler’ route, the Skeleton Gorge path begins in the iconic Kirstenbosch Gardens up the eastern side of the mountain. You can book a picnic with a guide where you will be able to snack on the sandy shores of a dam. Soft ‘beach’ sand and incredible views sound like a special location to ask the question with your engagement ring.
Idea 2: Get engaged mid-air!
The aerial cableway delivers a breathtaking vertical ride that takes you up 765 metres in four to five minutes. The cableway is no stranger to weddings on the mountain, hosting about one a week on the mountain.
This savvy groom-to-be recently went all out with a banner placed on the slopes below the cableway. Imagine his partner’s response when they spotted the words ‘Will You Marry Me?’ sweeping below? You could even consider contacting the operators and see if you can get an on-board guide to get in on the action and ask the question on your behalf. Either way, taking this giant leap and proposing while you soar above the city will guarantee that your significant other will never forget the moment you presented your engagement ring.
Idea 3: Ask a professional
If you haven’t got the confidence, or time, to put together a Table Mountain proposal, consider calling in the experts. The Cape Town crew here offers proposal co-ordination to take the sweat out of the experience for you.
They’ll work with you to hire a professional photographer that will capture the special moment that truly reflects your love as well as hands pictures of engagement rings. You can even hire a ‘Marry Me’ sign, and they’ll organise the final details on the day and the set-up. Family and friends are welcome. Just clue The Perfect Proposal team in on your ideas and intentions.
Want to be even more romantic? You could add a musical proposal to the experience. They will again match you with a musician, who will then serenade your magical moment with melodies of your choice.
Idea 4: Take your proposal to the next level
Enjoying the full scale of Table Mountain is best done in a helicopter. Even if your bride-to-be is a regular hiker or visitor of Table Mountain, seeing it from above will be a bucket-list experience she’ll never forget. And if you choose to ‘ask for her hand’ while you swoop over the peninsula, she’ll have a proposal story to share for decades to come.
Again, you can arrange for a banner to be placed on the mountain and chat to your pilot beforehand about flying close to it. The 24-minute peninsula spin, again offered by Perfect Proposal, will ensure it’s just the two of you living in the moment when you propose. The trip will take in the Atlantic Seaboard, flying all the way from Hout Bay to Chapman’s Peak, and then cross over to False Bay, along Noordhoek and Sun Valley. The grand finale takes a turn over Table Mountain before you land on the helipads at Cape Town V&A Waterfront.
Finish this exhilarating proposal off with a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate. Ask the team to have a bouquet of roses to be delivered as you land to end the experience off on a beautiful note. Tip: keep some of the roses and dry them, and then ask your bouquet designer to include a bud in your floral arrangement on your wedding day.
Idea 5: Get away from it all
A romantic retreat to stage your proposal doesn’t mean you have to head off into the country for a weekend. The Overseers Mountain Cottage and the Table Mountain Hut both offer overnight accommodation on the iconic rock. In the case of the Table Mountain Hut, the lodging is a stone and corrugated iron cottage at a staggering 760m altitude. The historic building was built in 1904. Book it for your loved one and propose in utter solitude huddled around a wood fire. The hut has two rooms, so see if you will have exclusivity.
You can capture the magic of an overnight mountain stay too (without hitting high altitudes) at the Wash House on the slopes of Table Mountain. It can accommodate up to 24 people so you could make your wedding proposal a family affair. The Platteklip Wash House is part of the historical Wash House complex. This is where the city’s washerwomen worked in the mid to late 19th century. Beautifully restored today, it’s an inspiring gem to be found in the heart of the Mother City.
Toast to your future
One of the region’s much-loved wineries, Durbanville Hills, has come up with a novel Table Mountain experience. The ‘wine safari’ is ideal if you want to experience the beauty of Table Mountain without working up a sweat. The hardest work will be tasting glorious wines and celebrating your engagement.
You’ll be treated to stunning views of Cape Town from the comfort of the safari vehicle. The bonus is you’ll have access to exclusive areas of the mountain not usually open to the public. The trail kicks off at the Table Mountain cableway, leading into a forest of oak and cork trees, with vistas of the bay, city and beyond.
Ten percent of all proceeds are donated to South African National Parks (SANParks) for conservation projects. A legacy you can be proud of as part of your proposal experience. Tours operate Monday to Thursday and Saturday at 11h00, and last about three hours. Operations on Friday are at 10h00 and 15h00. The cost is R500pp, including the Wine Safari, tasting, snacks and a bottle of Durbanville Hills wine to take home.
