MARQUISE SHAPE DIAMOND

The marquise diamond shape was created for Louis the XIV, a monarch who ruled as the King of France. Legend holds that Louis the XIV, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, wanted a diamond that would be as brilliant, and in a shape that could match the smile, of the Marquise of Pompadour. The incorrect proportions could result in the light reflection being notably diminished.

Symmetry is a very important factor to look out for when purchasing a marquise diamond.

The two points on either end of the stone must align perfectly, and the right and left sides should form a mirror image. Misalignment of even the smallest kind will result in the final diamond looking off kilter. A six-prong mounting will provide the security required for the marquise shape, with four prongs holding the body and two V-shaped prongs secured to protect the pointed ends. The end points are vulnerable to chipping, making the prongs essential for protection of the diamond.

In larger marquise diamonds weighing over one carat, the colour of the diamond may appear darker at the ends. To avoid this, it is best to select a diamond with a higher colour grading.
