MARQUISE SHAPE DIAMOND

The marquise diamond shape was created for Louis the XIV, a monarch who ruled as the King of France. Legend holds that Louis the XIV, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, wanted a diamond that would be as brilliant, and in a shape that could match the smile, of the Marquise of Pompadour. And that was how the Marquise shape diamond was born. Because of its shape, it is sometimes also known as “navette” (little boat).

The marquise diamond has a slender elongated shape characterised by two sharp points on either end of it. It has a length to width ratio of 1.75 – 2.25 to 1, with the ideal ratio being 2 to 1. The standard number of facets on a Marquise diamond is 58. The elongated shape of the marquise provides the appearance of a diamond of greater weight and size than it actually is, making it a good choice for those concerned with size.

Due to its elongated, oval shape, the marquise diamond is prone to the “bowtie” effect – an absence of light reflection in the table of the diamond, taking on the shape of a bowtie. This problem can often be solved by adding more facets to the crown of the stone. Though a subtle bowtie effect is barely noticeable, a prominent one can have a negative impact on a diamond’s value, and grading.

The marquise diamond’s unique shape requires a wealth of knowledge and skill to perfect. To achieve its distinct shape, perfect proportion is required. If it is shaped too long or too wide, it will not adhere to the marquise diamond’s specifications, and will not deliver the optimum amount of brilliance. The incorrect proportions could result in the light reflection being notably diminished.

Symmetry is a very important factor to look out for when purchasing a marquise diamond.

The two points on either end of the stone must align perfectly, and the right and left sides should form a mirror image. Misalignment of even the smallest kind will result in the final diamond looking off kilter. A six-prong mounting will provide the security required for the marquise shape, with four prongs holding the body and two V-shaped prongs secured to protect the pointed ends. The end points are vulnerable to chipping, making the prongs essential for protection of the diamond.

In larger marquise diamonds weighing over one carat, the colour of the diamond may appear darker at the ends. To avoid this, it is best to select a diamond with a higher colour grading.

The marquise diamond is the perfect diamond for those who want their diamond to look as arrestingly large as possible. Like other elongated diamond shapes, the marquise diamond accentuates long fingers, and makes them appear thinner.

This is also of the "brilliant" type of diamonds and is associated with the personality traits of the extroverted, innovative, and ambitious and those who are passionate at confronting the challenges of life. The eye-catching cut offers a unique, unrivalled charm.
